Success Stories: Inspiring Words from a Website Visitor

I was diagnosed at age six with optic nerve damage (that's what they called it in 1959.) In 1996, I learned a new word - Optic Atrophy. My world of vision started at 20/70. Until present day, my vision is 20/200 in the left eye and 20/400 in the right eye. This is my life story in short version of course.

I was born in 1953. I went to work in 1968 and graduated high school in 1971. I've worked all my life up to the year 2000 when my eyesight finally forced me to retire. I am married and have twin daughters and 5 grandchildren. I am going to tell you what my career job was for 32 years. I was a meat cutter for a large retail chain supermarket. Believe me, trying to or living and working in a normal everyday world with low vision is an everyday struggle, but if you put your mind to it you can do it.

I found out late in my life about all the good things out there to help people with low vision to live a productively good life. My parents always told me when your situation gets you down look around - there is someone that has a situation worse than you, then think about what they are going through.

I thank you for the opportunity to share my little life story with you.
