Seminar: October 3, 2009

On October 3, 2009, Austin Retina Associates, in partnership with the Macula Vision Research Foundation, held its annual public seminar focused on disseminating information about macular degeneration.

The meetings were started to educate the Austin community about age-related macular degeneration and the effects it can have on those with the disease and the people in their lives.  The seminar was hosted at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus.

Lea Bramnick, the executive director of the MVRF, welcomed the audience and talked about the goals of the organization and how its fundraising efforts go entirely towards education and funding groundbreaking research in the search for a cure.

Dr. Mark Levitan then took the podium to discuss the newest information on research and treatment.  The next speaker was Dr. James W. Dooner, who talked about the latest advances in technology, including stem cells and retinal implants.

The last speaker was Dr. Mary Darden, who focused her discussion on how patients can “live well” with macular degeneration.
